Take some time to learn a little more about the Windjammer teachers.

Mrs. Farthing
Social Studies

Hello, and welcome to 8th grade!  My name is Paula Farthing.  I’ve been at CMS for 15 years and I have been teaching Social Studies since 1993.  Our family resides on a farm just outside of West College Corner, Indiana.  We raise cattle, soy beans and corn.  In my limited spare time, I love to go boating, travel and spend time with my two beautiful grandchildren.

All students must participate in classroom discussion and activities.  In addition, each student must maintain a notebook with daily warm up questions (bell work).  Students will also frequently take notes in a variety of formats.  All assignments are expected to be submitted on time.  Missed tests, class work and homework assignments as well as notes given in class are the responsibility of the student and must be made up in a timely manner.  Grades are a combination of classroom participation/ behavior; warm up notebook; activities; projects; homework; quizzes; reading reactions; group work; and test scores.

Science

Hi! I’m Mrs. Melville and I’m so excited to be the Windjammers Science teacher! I’m a Connersville native and received my Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and Mathematics with concentrations in Biology and Ecology from Indiana University East in 2010. I am currently earning my M.A.T. in Biology from IU East. When I’m not at school (which isn’t often these days, between being a teacher AND a student), I spend most of my time at home relaxing. I enjoy spending time with my husband and son, our 2 dogs and 1 cat, and my many houseplants. I also love crafting with any media/form, and DIY home renovations.

Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus says, “Take chances. Make mistakes. Get messy!” and it is the best definition of science I can think of. A huge part of science is taking risks, opening up your mind, making messes, mistakes, and failing (yes, failing!). Science is also learning from your mistakes, adjusting your plans, cleaning up your messes and trying again… and again… and again until you succeed. Think about it- where would we be today without the failures and eventual successes of the great scientists of our past?

I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of taking chances, making messes, and learning with all my wonderful Windjammers!

Hi! I am Mrs. Carroll and the math teacher for the Windjammer Team. I teach 8th grade Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. I am so excited to be back at Connersville Middle for my fifth year, Connersville High School for 4 years. I previously taught math at CMS for 9 years; 4 years with Windjammers and 5 years with the Diamonds. I am a graduate of Miami University and IU East. I have one son, Joe, who recently graduated from Rose-Hulman, and is a software engineer in St. Louis.

Math IS a challenging subject which takes effort and perseverance. I expect ALL students to give their very best effort in my class. Mistakes are inherent in math and rest assured that EVERYBODY makes them...including me. That's why we use PENCILS! It is the students' responsibility to keep up with their work and absent work. I will post all homework assignments on our team website, as well as upload assignments in Google Classroom. If students are in need of extra help, I am usually available before or after school on most day. Let's hope that this school year will be "smooth sailing" for all!
